Why Pursue the ELSO ECMO Certification?
Having worked as an ECMO specialist for a little over a year and a half, I’ve gained hands-on experience, attended conferences, and learned from some of the best in the field. I’ve also realized that while practical knowledge is invaluable, ECMO practices can vary significantly—not just between centers but also between ECMO practitioners. The ELSO Adult ECMO Certification (E-AEC) offers an opportunity to bring uniformity to this diverse field by establishing consistent standards that we can all adhere to. Certification is vital, whether you’re just starting out like me or have years of experience.
1. Standardization of Care Across Centers and Specialists
One thing that stood out to me while working with ECMO is how much practices can differ. Not only do hospitals have their protocols, but even ECMO specialists within the same team can approach patient care slightly differently. ELSO certification provides a way to standardize ECMO practices, ensuring that regardless of where or with whom you work, everyone operates with a common knowledge foundation and follows evidence-based guidelines. This standardization helps ensure consistent, high-quality patient care, no matter the setting.
2. Enhanced Career Opportunities
For someone like me, with a year and a half of experience, certification offers a way to solidify my learning and demonstrate my growing competency. It shows a commitment to my professional development and helps me stand out in an increasingly competitive field. Certification for more seasoned ECMO specialists can further validate their expertise and potentially open doors to leadership roles or specialized positions. Certification ensures that you’re recognized for your knowledge and dedication to excellence.
3. Structured, Evidence-Based Learning
Throughout my journey, I’ve attended ECMO conferences in Kuwait and Seattle, participated in numerous simulations at my workplace, and supplemented my learning with online resources, including YouTube and reading. While these experiences have been incredibly valuable, the ELSO certification offers a more structured, evidence-based learning path. It ensures that my practical experience is aligned with internationally recognized standards and helps fill in any knowledge gaps. For those with more experience, certification can be a way to stay updated on the latest advancements in ECMO and ensure that their practices align with current best practices.
4. Commitment to Patient Safety
ECMO is a high-stakes therapy, and ensuring patient safety is at the core of what we do. Certification provides reassurance that you are equipped to handle the challenges of ECMO, from managing complications to troubleshooting issues in real time. For someone like me who is still building my skill set, certification is a critical step toward ensuring I can provide the best care possible. For senior specialists, it’s a way to maintain alignment with the latest safety protocols, reinforcing their dedication to patient well-being.
5. Professional Growth and Recognition

Why Senior ECMO Specialists Should Consider Certification
Certification might seem unnecessary or even burdensome for those who have been in the field of ECMO for years and have a wealth of experience. You’ve likely managed countless ECMO cases, particularly during pivotal moments such as the COVID-19 pandemic, when ECMO became a critical tool in patient care. Your practical experience may feel as though it exceeds any training manual. However, there are several reasons why senior specialists should still consider pursuing the ELSO Adult ECMO Certification (E-AEC).
1. Demonstrate Leadership by Setting the Standard
As a senior specialist, you are a clinician and a role model for the next generation. By becoming certified, you set a powerful example of commitment to continuous professional growth. Even if your experience during high-demand periods like the COVID-19 surge has taken you beyond the textbook, pairing that hands-on knowledge with formal certification shows your dedication to the highest standards of care.
2. Keep Your Skills Current in a Rapidly Evolving Field
ECMO has grown significantly, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it was deployed more frequently and under more complex circumstances. While you’ve likely adapted to these new demands through experience, certification ensures you remain up-to-date with the latest technological advances, techniques, and guidelines. This helps bridge the gap between on-the-ground experience and emerging evidence-based practices.
3. Avoid Being Left Behind as Certification Becomes Standard
As ECMO continues to evolve, many healthcare institutions are moving toward mandatory certification to ensure standardization of care. Even though your extensive experience during critical times may far surpass what any exam can measure, earning certification will keep you eligible for future roles and ensure you’re in line with institutional requirements that may soon become widespread.
4. It’s an Opportunity to Share Your Knowledge
Preparing for certification doesn’t have to be just about meeting exam requirements; it can be an opportunity to mentor and guide others. You have invaluable insights to share as someone who’s been through routine and extraordinary ECMO cases, such as during COVID-19. Engaging with the certification process allows you to help shape the learning of less experienced colleagues, ensuring that the practical lessons you’ve learned are passed down to the next generation.
5. Professional Satisfaction and Legacy
Certification can be viewed as the culmination of your years of service and experience, formally recognizing your expertise. It’s a way to cement your legacy in the ECMO field, especially given your critical contributions during ECMO’s most demanding periods. Acknowledging your professional achievements can offer personal satisfaction, knowing that you’ve met the highest standards in your field while continuing to influence the future of ECMO care.
By approaching certification as an opportunity to enhance your professional journey and the broader ECMO community, senior ECMO specialists—especially those who navigated ECMO’s critical role during the COVID-19 surge—can stay at the forefront of the field. Your combination of experience and certification ensures that future generations continue to benefit from your expertise while maintaining global standards of care.
How to Get Certified
To sit for the E-AEC exam, you must complete specific criteria, including didactic courses, simulation labs, and clinical experience. The exam consists of National Board of Medical Examiner (NBME)-style questions that assess your knowledge across various domains. Once your application is accepted, you can take the exam in a proctored, remote setting, allowing you to do it at your convenience. Certification costs $300 and is valid for three years.
In conclusion, the ELSO Adult ECMO Certification (E-AEC) is a valuable step toward enhancing your skills, advancing your career, and contributing to better patient outcomes. By aligning yourself with globally recognized standards, you’ll increase your competence and confidence in managing ECMO in complex clinical environments.
